Overview
goHunterdon’s Speed Study Program offers local municipalities an opportunity to evaluate vehicular speed, increase motorist awareness, and prioritize enforcement. Municipalities may request that a radar speed unit be installed, free of charge, on local roadways to collect data on vehicle volume and speed.
Studies provide objective data to assist communities seeking ways to address concerns about motor vehicle speed, particularly in areas with pedestrian activity.
The resulting data may be used to inform safety discussions and support enforcement efforts.
The standard term of study is thirty (30) days. Upon completion of the study, a written report, with graphs and charts, is provided to the municipality. Two types of studies are available:
Display/Stealth Study
Commonly known as the “Your Speed Is” sign, the Speed Sentry unit collects data on traffic volumes and motorist speed. This data is evaluated and the municipality is provided with a written report documenting data with charts and graphs.
To obtain the most useful data about vehicle speeds, the Equipment is installed for at least one week with the display turned off. In this “stealth” mode, the Equipment records speed data. This data collection allows for more accurate conclusions about typical speeds at the location and any effect that the sign’s display has on vehicle speeds. The Equipment is then programmed to “display” mode, where motorist may observe their traveling speed while data is being collected. The Equipment may also be used in Display only mode to increase motorist awareness.
Stealth Only Study
A Stealth Study utilizes a smaller and less conspicuous unit than the Display/Stealth unit which may provide a more accurate evaluation of motorist behavior. The unit is installed for approximately one month. During that period, the stealth unit collects data on traffic volumes, speeds traveled, as well as speed by vehicle type (passenger vehicle, truck, motorcycle, etc), day of week and time of day. The data is evaluated and provided to the municipality in a written report documenting the findings, complete with charts and graphs.
