Students at Hunterdon elementary and intermediate schools continue to receive education and encouragement as part of their daily walk to school. The 2018-2019 school year marks 10 years that goHunterdon has facilitated the Safe Routes to School program in Hunterdon County. The goals of the program are simple ~ “Where it is safe, get kids walking or bicycling; Where it is not safe, make it safe.”
The program features in-school safety education combined with designated, chaperoned walk to school days to offer students in grades K-8 the opportunity to put into practice the safety lesson that they have learned. Lessons include the basics of using crosswalks, looking left, right, and left again before crossing, and the role of the crossing guard. For older students, additional emphasis is placed on the dangers of distracted walking from cell phone use.
Participating schools include: Bloomsbury Elementary School, Califon Public School, Clinton Public School, Delaware Township School, Reading-Fleming Intermediate School (Flemington), Frenchtown Elementary School, Hampton Public School, High Bridge Elementary School, High Bridge Middle School, Lambertville Public School, Lebanon Borough School, Milford Public School, and Barley Sheaf Elementary School (Raritan Township).
