After three decades, goHunterdon’s Traffic Alert Service continues to be a reliable source of real-time travel information for commuters navigating Hunterdon County, NJ. From traffic congestion and crashes to construction detours and weather-related hazards, the free service keeps drivers informed and prepared.
What began in the 1990s as TRAF-FAX, a fax-based alert system sent to about 20 local worksites, has evolved into goHunterdon’s Traffic Alert Service, now serving nearly 3,800 subscribers via email and social media.
Traffic alerts are sent during the peak commuting hours of 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.to help drivers make smarter travel decisions.
In the past year, goHunterdon issued 522 traffic alerts, covering a range of incidents and conditions affecting interstate, state, county, and local roads.
Feedback from a recent subscriber survey highlights the value of the service:
- 91% of respondents use goHunterdon Traffic Alerts as their primary source for road condition updates. Other sources include Google Maps (43%), Waze (41%), 511nj.org (23%), and community Facebook pages (20%).
- Over 60% of subscribers have used the service for five years or more.
- 95% of subscribers forward alerts to up to five other people, expanding the reach and benefit of the information shared.
- The majority of subscribers use the alerts to adjust travel plans—choosing alternate routes or changing departure times based on the alerts they receive. About 60% check alerts before commuting to or from work, and 38% work within Hunterdon County.
The service continues to be one of goHunterdon’s most popular offerings. One survey respondent noted: “The traffic alerts are an excellent service provided to the community, especially with increasing traffic in our area. Keep up the good work!”
