Hunterdon County Commissioner Zach Rich, who serves as the liaison to the Planning and Land Use Department, recently announced that work is underway to develop a countywide Local Safety Action Plan (LSAP). This plan will identify and prioritize transportation safety improvements aimed at reducing fatal and serious injury crashes on county and municipal roadways. goHunterdon is actively participating in the plan development process as a member of the Local Implementation Committee.
The development of the Local Safety Action Plan is being funded by a grant from the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority, the federally authorized metropolitan planning organization for 13 counties in northern and central New Jersey. Creating LSAPs can help counties and municipalities access new funding opportunities to implement safety plans, including federal programs such as the $5 billion ‘Safe Streets and Roads for All Program.’
Crash analysis for Hunterdon County indicates that 43 percent of all fatal and serious injury crashes occur on county and local roads, compared to 60 percent statewide. The Federal Highway Administration has recognized LSAPs as a proven and effective strategy to reduce these crashes.
The Hunterdon County Local Area Safety Plan will incorporate community feedback, data analysis, and best practices in transportation safety to implement effective solutions. There will be several opportunities for Hunterdon County residents to provide feedback to help guide the creation of the plan. A public online survey is currently active, and in-person events are being scheduled.
